Custom CNC Machining · Built to Your Print
Precision Stepped Sleeves Manufactured to Print
Stepped sleeves serve critical roles in rotational equipment — as spacers, shaft protectors, or bearing interfaces where diameter changes accommodate different mating parts or load conditions. SleeveMFG manufactures custom stepped sleeves to your specific engineering drawings, controlling the details that matter: precise axial transition points, tight dimensional control, surface finish, and concentricity between diameters.

Engineering Complex Stepped Geometries
Manufacturing a stepped sleeve involves more than just turning different diameters. The transition between steps — whether a sharp corner, a radius, or a chamfer — must be machined to maintain the structural integrity of the part. Improperly machined transitions can create stress risers, leading to premature failure in high-speed or high-load applications.
We manage the machining process end to end: shoulder faces are held square to the centerline, and transitions between diameters meet your print requirements. Using CNC turning and grinding, we hold strict tolerances on the OD, ID, and length of each step, ensuring the sleeve seats correctly against bearings, seals, and housing bores.
What We Control on Every Part
-
1
Step transitions to spec — sharp corners, radii, or chamfers machined without introducing stress risers.
-
2
Square shoulder faces — every shoulder perpendicular to the part centerline for proper seating.
-
3
Per-step dimensions — strict CNC-turned and ground tolerances on each OD, ID, and step length.
-
4
Fitment-ready surfaces — geometry prepared for reliable assembly against bearings, seals, and housing bores.
Manufacturing Capabilities and Tolerances
Our production setup is designed for precision. We combine CNC turning for primary shaping with secondary operations like grinding and honing to reach the final dimensions required for tight-tolerance fits.
| Parameter | Capability |
|---|---|
| Outside Diameter | Ø3 mm – Ø500 mm |
| Inside Diameter | Ø1 mm – Ø450 mm |
| Length | 3 mm – 1500 mm |
| CNC Turning Tolerance | ±0.01 mm |
| Precision Grinding Tolerance | ±0.005 mm |
| Concentricity / Runout | Down to 0.01 mm |
| Surface Finish | Down to Ra 0.2 μm |
| Material Types | Stainless, Carbon Steel, Alloy, Tool Steel, Copper, Nickel Alloys |
Our shop floor is equipped to handle the full manufacturing cycle — including drilling, threading, and keyway milling — so we deliver a finished part ready for installation without additional outsourced operations.
Managing Concentricity and Geometric Integrity
For stepped sleeves, the most significant challenge is maintaining concentricity between the various outer and inner diameters. If the bore is not perfectly aligned with the outer steps, the component will cause runout and premature wear in the assembly. Our process is sequenced to eliminate that risk.
-
STEP 01
Precision Workholding
Rigid, accurately located setups keep the bore and outer steps in alignment through roughing and semi-finish operations.
-
STEP 02
OD/ID Finish Grinding
Where required, OD/ID grinding after initial turning locks the final geometry so it stays consistent across the entire length of the part.
-
STEP 03
CMM Batch Inspection
Every batch is inspected with CMM, bore gauges, and micrometers to verify concentricity and roundness match your drawings.
Specific Fits, Calibrated Processes
If your application requires specific fits — such as H6/h6 for bearing interfaces — we calibrate our process to achieve those exact clearance or interference fits.
Material Selection for Industrial Applications
The performance of a stepped sleeve is dictated by the material choice. We machine a wide range of industrial metals to match the operating environment of your equipment.
Corrosion Resistance
304, 316, and 17-4PH stainless steel for pump and marine environments.
High Load & Wear Resistance
4140, 4340, or 52100 bearing steel, often paired with induction hardening or nitriding.
Weight & Conductivity
Aluminum and copper alloys for specialized motor or electrical applications.
Extreme Conditions
Inconel, Monel, and other nickel alloys for chemical processing or high-temperature service.
Heat treatment & coatings: If your design requires hard chrome plating, electroless nickel, or PVD/DLC coating, we coordinate these processes to ensure the final component meets the required hardness and wear characteristics.
Applications: OEM Production and MRO Replacement
We serve two distinct customer needs regarding stepped sleeves.
01
OEM Production
For equipment manufacturers, we provide consistent, repeatable production runs. We work from your 3D models and 2D prints to ensure every sleeve is identical, simplifying your assembly process and reducing the risk of fitment issues on the line. We can support everything from pilot batches to long-term supply contracts.
02
MRO and Repair
For maintenance and repair companies, we manufacture replacement sleeves for equipment where OEM parts are no longer available or lead times are excessive. If you do not have a drawing, we can reverse-engineer a new sleeve from your worn sample, ensuring the replacement restores the original equipment's performance.
