Machining Capabilities
Keyway and Groove Profiles for Mechanical Assembly and Fluid Management
Our manufacturing facility is equipped to handle a variety of slotting and grooving profiles required for mechanical assembly and fluid management.
Keyways and Keyseats
We machine internal and external keyways for torque transmission and component indexing.
- Internal Keyways
- Produced via vertical slotting or broaching for high-precision fits in bushings and shaft sleeves.
- External Keyways
- Machined on CNC milling centers to ensure alignment with the sleeve's centerline.
- Dimensional Control
- Strict control over keyway width, depth, and angular orientation relative to other sleeve features.
Groove Machining
Beyond standard keyways, we manufacture complex groove profiles essential for assembly and sealing.
- Snap-Ring Grooves
- Precision internal and external grooves for retaining rings and circlips.
- O-Ring and Seal Grooves
- Engineered for mechanical seal sleeves, ensuring the surface finish and profile meet the requirements for elastomer or mechanical seal performance.
- Lubrication Grooves
- Helical, longitudinal, or circumferential oil grooves machined into bearing sleeves and bushings to facilitate lubricant distribution and heat dissipation.

Engineering and Design Considerations
Material Hardness
For hardened components, we recommend machining keyways and grooves prior to heat treatment whenever possible to avoid distortion. If secondary machining is required on hardened materials such as induction hardened sleeves, we utilize specific tooling and CNC milling processes to maintain tolerance.
Tolerance and Fits
When specifying your requirements, please include the relevant ISO or ANSI fit standards for keyways. For seal and snap-ring grooves, provide the manufacturer's datasheet for the specific seal or ring so that the groove dimensions — specifically width and corner radii — match the component requirements exactly.
Integrated Manufacturing
Sleeve components often require a combination of processes. By coordinating CNC turning, OD/ID grinding, and milling in-house, SleeveMFG ensures that the keyway or groove is perfectly concentric and aligned with the primary bores and diameters — eliminating the need for multiple suppliers and reducing the risk of tolerance stack-up issues.
