Precision Thin-Wall Machining for Custom Sleeves
SleeveMFG specializes in machining thin-wall sleeves, bushings, and tubular components where standard clamping can cause deformation, taper, out-of-round parts, or loss of concentricity.

Built to your drawing
From one prototype to a production batch, our process is tailored to thin-wall geometries and demanding dimensional requirements.
The manufacturing challenge
Thin walls demand control at every stage
When wall thickness drops below standard ratios—typically under 1 mm or 5% of the diameter—the workpiece loses rigidity and becomes vulnerable to distortion, vibration, heat, and stress release.
Clamping distortion
Traditional chucks apply concentrated pressure, causing deformation during machining and ovality after the part springs back.
Vibration and chatter
Thin sections have less mass to dampen harmonic vibration, affecting surface finish and accelerating tool wear.
Thermal expansion
Heat from turning or grinding can expand the component and create inaccurate diameter measurements or taper.
Residual stress
Material removal can release internal stress and cause the component to warp after it is removed from the machine.
Our production protocol
How SleeveMFG manages thin-wall tolerances
Our engineering team selects work-holding, cutting, and inspection methods around your drawing requirements and material behavior.
01 / Work holding
Support the part without collapsing the wall
-
●
Expanding mandrels: Provide uniform internal support for external turning.
-
●
Custom soft jaws: Match the specific part diameter and distribute clamping pressure.
-
●
Collet systems: Provide 360-degree contact to minimize point-pressure deformation.
02 / Material removal
Build accuracy through controlled stages
-
●
Roughing passes: Remove bulk material and release internal stresses before final dimensions.
-
●
Stress relief: Secondary heat treatment can stabilize the component before finishing.
-
●
Precision finishing: Sharp, positive-rake inserts reduce cutting forces and work hardening.

Material expertise
Machining strategies matched to the alloy
Stainless steel 304, 316, 17-4PH
High-pressure coolant helps manage heat and prevent work hardening.
Aluminum alloys 6061, 7075
High-speed turning and specialized chip-breaking geometries help control chatter.
Carbon and alloy steel 4140, 1045
Controlled depth-of-cut reduces the risk of warping during material removal.
Copper and bronze alloys
Precise tool clearance helps prevent tearing in softer materials.
Beyond machining
Secondary processes and surface treatments
We coordinate downstream operations to improve durability, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and final fit.
Heat treatment
Induction hardening or through-hardening increases wear resistance while maintaining core toughness.
Surface coatings
Hard chrome, electroless nickel, and PVD/DLC coatings improve surface hardness and corrosion resistance.
Precision grinding
OD and ID grinding correct heat-treatment distortion and produce the required fit and finish.
Industry applications
Thin-wall components for critical fits
Our services support OEMs and MRO providers where weight reduction, concentricity, and precise ID/OD relationships are essential.
Mechanical seals
Thin-wall seal sleeves requiring high concentricity to help prevent leakage.
Aerospace and automation
Lightweight spacers and bushings that reduce mass without sacrificing structural integrity.
Pump components
Wear sleeves and shaft protectors designed for high-speed rotational applications.
Precision instrumentation
Tubular components requiring tight internal and external diameter tolerances.
